Valaistusnäyttö refers to a display technology that uses a backlight to illuminate pixels. This is in contrast to technologies like OLED, which generate their own light. In a typical valaistusnäyttö, such as those found in many LCD screens, a light source, often LEDs, is positioned behind the display panel. This light then passes through various layers, including polarizing filters and liquid crystal cells, before reaching the viewer. The liquid crystals act as shutters, controlling how much light passes through each pixel, thus creating the image.

The effectiveness of a valaistusnäyttö is often judged by its brightness, contrast ratio, and color reproduction. Backlight technology has evolved significantly, with edge-lit and full-array local dimming (FALD) being common implementations. FALD systems offer better control over illumination by dividing the backlight into zones that can be dimmed or brightened independently, leading to improved contrast and deeper blacks.
