vaimsus

Vaimsus is the quality or state related to the non-material aspect of human life, such as spirit, mind, or inner life, and the search for meaning beyond the purely material. The term is formed in Estonian from vaim (spirit, mind) and the suffix -sus, which marks a state or attribute.

It is not identical with religion and can be expressed within religious traditions or outside them. Vaimsus covers beliefs about ultimate questions, experiences of transcendence or connectedness, and practices aimed at personal growth or ethical living, such as contemplation, meditation, gratitude, or reflective dialogue. It may also be expressed through art, nature, and relationships.

Scholars use the concept across disciplines, including philosophy, theology, psychology, and sociology. In contemporary discourse, vaimsus is often linked to well-being and resilience, while religious traditions may ground it in doctrine and practice.

Debates concern its definitional boundaries, cultural variation, and its compatibility with secular, scientific, or materialist worldviews. Critics warn against vagueness or essentialism and caution against private beliefs shaping public life without inclusive, pluralistic norms.
