In Estonian, vahesein translates to partition or divider and typically refers to non-load-bearing or semi-structural walls that define separate zones without enclosing a space completely. Vahesein can be fixed to floors and ceilings or be modular and portable, allowing for flexible layouts.

Common materials for vahesein include gypsum board (drywall), glass, wood, metal, fabric, and composite panels. Types range from lightweight partitions and glass walls to solid partitions, perforated screens, and sliding or folding systems. Some vaheseinad are designed to be permanent parts of a room, while others are designed for easy reconfiguration in changing spaces.

The primary functions of a vahesein are to create privacy, organize space, and influence acoustics and daylight distribution. They also support routing of services such as electrical conduits and data cables in modular systems, enabling adaptable floor plans in homes, offices, retail spaces, and galleries.
