Their primary function is to enhance driver visibility and safety by activating the windshield wipers when rain is detected.

These systems typically employ infrared technology. A light-emitting diode (LED) on the windshield emits infrared light, which then reflects off the outer surface of the glass. A sensor measures the intensity of the reflected light. When the windshield is dry, a significant amount of light is reflected back. However, when raindrops accumulate on the glass, they scatter the infrared light, reducing the amount of light that reaches the sensor. The system interprets this decrease in reflected light as the presence of rain.

Upon detecting rain, the vaateripustin signals the vehicle's computer to activate the windshield wipers. The sensitivity of these systems can often be adjusted by the driver, allowing them to control the speed or frequency of the wiper strokes based on the intensity of the rainfall.
