V2N stands for vehicle-to-network, a communications paradigm enabling data exchange between vehicles and back-end networks, cloud services, and wide-area infrastructure. It complements V2V and V2I by providing access to external data and applications via cellular networks.

Most V2N deployments use cellular technology—4G LTE and 5G—often through C-V2X. Vehicles connect through onboard modems to operator networks and through edge computing resources (MEC) for low-latency services, with cloud platforms handling storage and analytics. Standards from 3GPP, ETSI ITS-G5, and related bodies guide interoperability.

Key data flows include location, telematics, diagnostics, and infotainment content, with safety-critical information typically prioritized. Data travels from the vehicle to core networks and back to applications, which may provide updates, route guidance, or remote diagnostics.

Use cases include remote vehicle diagnostics and software updates, fleet management, adaptive routing, usage-based insurance, and emergency services integration with cloud systems and city infrastructure.

Challenges include coverage gaps, latency and reliability requirements for safety-related services, security and privacy concerns, and interoperability across networks and vendors. As 5G and edge computing mature, V2N is a core element of connected mobility and smart city initiatives.
