Võrgudest, or networks, are fundamental to modern communication and information sharing. In its simplest form, a network is a collection of interconnected devices that can exchange data. These devices can range from computers and servers to smartphones and printers, all linked together through various means.

The physical infrastructure of a network often involves cables, such as Ethernet, or wireless technologies like Wi-Fi. The way these devices are organized and communicate is governed by protocols, which are sets of rules that ensure orderly data transmission. Common examples include the Internet Protocol (IP) and the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).

Networks can vary significantly in scale and purpose. Local Area Networks (LANs) connect devices within a limited geographical area, like an office or home. Wide Area Networks (WANs) span larger distances, connecting multiple LANs across cities, countries, or even continents, with the internet being the most prominent example of a WAN.

Beyond their physical and logical structure, networks can be classified by their topology, which describes the arrangement of connections. Common topologies include bus, star, ring, and mesh. The choice of topology impacts network performance, reliability, and cost. Security is also a critical aspect of network design, employing measures like firewalls and encryption to protect data from unauthorized access.
