Usercentredness is a design and development philosophy that prioritizes the experiences, needs, goals, and contexts of end users throughout the lifecycle of a product or service. It emphasizes understanding users through research, involving them in design decisions, and delivering solutions that are usable, accessible, and meaningful.

In practice, usercentredness is closely aligned with user-centered design (UCD) and human-centered design. Common methods include conducting user research (interviews, surveys, observations), creating personas and scenarios, performing task analysis and usability testing, and iterating designs based on user feedback. It applies to digital products, services, and systems, and often requires collaboration across disciplines such as product management, design, engineering, and accessibility specialists.

Key principles include focusing on users from the outset, including diverse user groups, designing for real-world contexts, making tasks easy to perform, and ensuring accessibility. Evaluation is continuous, with metrics such as task success, time to complete, error rate, and user satisfaction guiding revisions.

History and standards: The emphasis on user involvement grew with the development of human–computer interaction in the late 20th century. Standards such as ISO 9241-210 define human-centered design processes. The term is often used interchangeably with UCD in both industry and academia.

Criticism and challenges: Adopting true usercentredness can be resource-intensive, and user input may be biased or unrepresentative. Balancing user desires with technical feasibility, business goals, and ethical considerations can be difficult.
