Urge incontinence, also known as overactive bladder syndrome, is a condition characterized by a sudden and strong urge to urinate, often followed by involuntary leakage of urine. This urge can be so intense that it is difficult to reach the toilet in time. It is a common form of urinary incontinence affecting both men and women, though it is more prevalent in women.

The exact cause of urge incontinence is not always clear, but it is often associated with the muscles of the bladder contracting involuntarily. This can be triggered by various factors including urinary tract infections, bladder stones, or neurological conditions like stroke or Parkinson's disease. In some cases, the bladder muscles may become overactive without any apparent underlying medical reason.

Symptoms typically include a frequent need to urinate, especially at night (nocturia), and sudden, strong urges that are difficult to suppress. Leakage of urine may occur during these urges. Diagnosis usually involves a medical history, physical examination, and sometimes urine tests or urodynamic studies to assess bladder function.

Treatment approaches aim to reduce the frequency and intensity of bladder contractions and improve bladder control. Behavioral therapies, such as bladder training and pelvic floor muscle exercises (Kegels), are often the first line of treatment. Medications, including antimuscarinics and beta-3 agonists, can help relax the bladder muscle and reduce urgency. In more severe or persistent cases, other interventions like nerve stimulation or surgery might be considered. Lifestyle modifications, such as limiting caffeine and alcohol intake, can also be beneficial for some individuals.
