Ureapitoisuus refers to the presence of Ureaplasma, a genus of bacteria that are part of the normal human genitourinary and respiratory tracts. These bacteria are considered commensal, meaning they typically coexist with humans without causing disease. However, under certain conditions, Ureaplasma can become pathogenic and lead to infections. The most common species associated with human health are Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum.

Ureaplasma infections are often asymptomatic, particularly in women. When symptoms do occur, they can include urethritis, a burning sensation during urination, and vaginal discharge. In men, Ureaplasma can be associated with non-gonococcal urethritis. Ureaplasma has also been implicated in reproductive health issues, such as infertility, spontaneous abortion, and preterm birth. In newborns, Ureaplasma colonization can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and meningitis, especially in premature infants.

Diagnosis of Ureaplasma infection is typically made through laboratory testing, usually a urine culture or a swab from the genital tract. Treatment usually involves antibiotics, such as doxycycline or azithromycin, although resistance to certain antibiotics can occur. Due to the widespread presence of Ureaplasma as a normal inhabitant of the body, the clinical significance of its detection without symptoms can be debated. However, in cases of suspected infection or reproductive complications, testing and treatment may be recommended.
