Untermodellierung, also known as submodeling or substructuring, is a numerical technique used in engineering and computational mechanics to analyze complex structures with high detail in specific areas. When a large and intricate model is computationally expensive to solve entirely, untermodellierung allows engineers to focus computational resources on critical regions. This is achieved by isolating a smaller, more detailed section of the overall model, known as the submodel.

The process typically begins with a global analysis of the entire structure using a coarser mesh. The results from this global analysis, such as displacements and forces, are then applied as boundary conditions to the more refined submodel. The submodel, with its finer mesh, can then capture local stress concentrations, deformation patterns, or other phenomena with greater accuracy. This approach significantly reduces the computational cost compared to meshing the entire structure with high fidelity.

Untermodellierung is particularly useful in areas experiencing high stress gradients, like near holes, notches, or joints, or when investigating dynamic behavior in localized regions. It's a practical method for balancing accuracy and computational efficiency, enabling detailed investigations of critical components without necessitating the massive computational power that a full, high-resolution model would require. The accuracy of the submodel is dependent on the quality of the boundary conditions transferred from the global model.
