Unberthing is the process by which a vessel separates from a berth, dock, or mooring and begins to move away from port facilities. The term is used in commercial shipping, naval operations, and recreational boating. It contrasts with berthing, the act of securing a vessel to a berth. The word combines the prefix un- with berth, indicating the reversal of the berthing action.

Procedures vary with vessel size and local practice. In larger ships, unberthing typically starts with coordination with harbor control, ensuring clearance and traffic separation. Mooring lines are released in a controlled sequence, fenders are positioned to protect the hull, and any lines or candles are disposed of or transferred as needed. Pilotage may guide the vessel while tugboats assist, especially in crowded or restricted waterways. The vessel then departs the berth under propulsion, using engines and, if available, bow or stern thrusters to maneuver clear of the dock and into the fairway.

For smaller vessels, unberthing is usually simpler: lines are cast off, the engine or paddle shift is engaged, and the vessel backs or proceeds away from the dock at a safe speed, keeping clear of other traffic and structures.

Safety and coordination are essential in unberthing. Operations follow port regulations, communicate with dock personnel and harbor authorities, and consider weather, current, tidal conditions, and berth design. Proper unberthing reduces the risk of collision, damage to moorings, or harm to personnel, and it sets the vessel on a safe course for its next maneuver.
