Tugboats, or tugs, are specialized vessels designed to assist larger ships in navigating confined or congested waters. Tugboats are valued for maneuverability and high pulling power relative to their size.

Historically, tugging began with small steam-powered boats used near docks. Diesel power and strengthened hulls in the 20th century increased capacity and reliability. In modern tugs, azimuth thrusters or other dynamic positioning components enable precise, 360-degree maneuvering in tight spaces.

Typical design features include a stout hull, heavy fenders, and towlines for line handling. Propulsion often relies on diesel engines driving propellers, though some vessels use bow or stern thrusters, azimuth thrusters, or waterjets to improve lateral movement and control during towing or pushing.

Types include harbor or terminal tugs that operate in ports; river or inland tugs for waterways; oceangoing tugs designed for offshore towing and escort duties; escort tugs for protecting ships in busy lanes; and salvage or fire-fighting tugs equipped for emergencies.

Operational routines involve attaching towlines, coordinating with pilots and ship masters, and applying thrust to assist a vessel's maneuvering. Tug crews follow international conventions, maintain their equipment, and conduct safety checks before any towing, pushing, or escort operation.
