Tööseadus, also known as the Labour Law, is a legislative framework governing employment relationships in Estonia. Its primary purpose is to regulate the rights and obligations of employers and employees, ensuring fair labor practices and working conditions. The law covers various aspects of employment, including employment contracts, working hours, wages, leave entitlements, occupational safety, and dismissal procedures.

The workseadus sets out the requirements for establishing employment contracts, which can be either fixed-term or indefinite. It stipulates that employment agreements must be in writing and include essential terms such as job description, salary, working hours, and trial period, if applicable. The law also defines the maximum working hours, which generally should not exceed eight hours per day and 40 hours per week, with provisions for overtime and rest periods.

In addition, the legislation provides regulations regarding paid annual leave, maternity and paternity leave, and other employee benefits. Occupational health and safety are emphasized to ensure a safe work environment for employees. The law also establishes procedures for resolving disputes between employers and employees, including mechanisms for negotiation and arbitration.

Employment termination and layoffs are addressed within the scope of the workseadus, outlining valid grounds for dismissal and procedures to be followed. Severance pay and notice periods are also regulated to protect the interests of workers.

The workseadus aligns with Estonia's commitments under European Union law and international labor standards, aiming to promote fair employment practices and social protection. It is periodically revised to adapt to changing labor market conditions and societal needs, ensuring that employment remains equitable and sustainable across Estonia.
