Tõendusjärjestus, also known as the hierarchy of evidence, is a concept used in research and evidence-based practice to rank the quality and reliability of different types of studies. It helps practitioners and researchers determine which sources of information are most trustworthy when making decisions or forming conclusions.

The general principle is that studies with more rigorous methodologies and designs are placed higher in the hierarchy. At the top typically lie systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), as these methods minimize bias and provide strong evidence by synthesizing findings from multiple studies. Randomized controlled trials themselves are considered a high level of evidence because they involve random allocation of participants to intervention or control groups, which helps to establish cause-and-effect relationships.

Below RCTs are observational studies, such as cohort studies and case-control studies. While these can identify associations, they are more susceptible to bias and confounding factors. Further down the hierarchy are non-interventional studies, expert opinions, and anecdotal evidence, which are generally considered the least reliable. The exact structure of the hierarchy can vary slightly depending on the field of study, but the core idea remains the same: prioritizing evidence that is least prone to bias and most likely to reflect the true effect.
