A tændingsnøgle, often translated as ignition key or car key, is a mechanical key used to operate the ignition system of a motor vehicle. Its primary function is to engage the starter motor to begin the engine's combustion process and to control the vehicle's electrical systems. Typically, a tændingsnøgle has a unique cut pattern that corresponds to tumblers within the vehicle's ignition switch. When inserted and turned, the key aligns these tumblers, allowing electrical circuits to be activated.

The basic operation involves turning the key to different positions. The "OFF" or "0" position usually cuts all power to the vehicle's systems. Moving to "ACC" or "Accessory" allows power to be supplied to non-essential electrical components like the radio or power windows without the engine running. The "ON" or "I" position powers the vehicle's main electrical systems, including the dashboard lights and fuel pump, preparing the engine for ignition. The final position, "START" or "II," engages the starter motor to crank the engine. Once the engine starts, the key is typically released from the "START" position and returns to "ON."

Modern vehicles often incorporate more sophisticated keys, such as transponder keys or key fobs. Transponder keys contain a small electronic chip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer system, preventing the engine from starting if the correct key is not present. Key fobs can offer keyless entry and ignition, allowing the driver to start the car without physically inserting a key. Despite these advancements, the fundamental principle of using a coded mechanism to authorize vehicle operation remains central to the ignition key's purpose.
