Accessory

An accessory is a supplementary item added to a primary object or activity to enhance its usefulness, appearance, or functionality. Accessories are typically optional and can be swapped or upgraded without altering the main item.

In fashion and personal styling, accessories include belts, hats, scarves, bags, jewelry, watches, sunglasses, gloves, ties, and footwear embellishments. They are used to complete an outfit, express personal style, or provide a practical function such as carrying items or providing warmth. In product design, accessories may also include items that personalize or protect the main item, such as cases, covers, or organizers.

In technology and consumer electronics, accessories are devices or components that extend a product’s capabilities or convenience. In computing, peripherals such as printers, mice, and external drives are often labeled as accessories or peripherals.

In architecture and real estate, an accessory can refer to structures or features on a property that are secondary to the main building, such as sheds, garages, gazebos, or pergolas. These features can add usable space or aesthetic value to a property without constituting the primary dwelling.

In legal terminology, an accessory is a person who assists in the commission of a crime or who aids the offender after the fact. Distinctions such as accessory before the fact and accessory after the fact describe the timing of the assistance, and terminology may vary by jurisdiction.
