Tähtiryhmien, or star clusters, are collections of stars that are gravitationally bound to each other. These celestial groupings are a significant subject in astronomy, offering insights into stellar evolution, galactic structure, and the history of the universe.

There are two primary types of star clusters: open clusters and globular clusters. Open clusters are typically found in the disk of spiral galaxies, like our own Milky Way. They contain relatively few stars, perhaps a few hundred to a few thousand, and are often younger and more loosely bound. The stars in open clusters tend to have similar ages and chemical compositions, as they are thought to have formed from the same giant molecular cloud. Examples include the Pleiades and the Hyades.

Globular clusters, on the other hand, are much older and more massive than open clusters. They are found in the halo and bulge of galaxies and can contain hundreds of thousands to millions of stars packed into a relatively small volume. The stars within globular clusters are generally much older, some dating back to the early universe. Their stars also show a wider range of chemical compositions, reflecting multiple generations of star formation. The Hercules Globular Cluster and Omega Centauri are well-known examples.

Studying star clusters allows astronomers to observe stars at different stages of their life cycles within a controlled environment. By analyzing the distribution of stars in a cluster's Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, scientists can determine its age and understand how stars evolve over time. The presence and distribution of star clusters also help astronomers map out the structure and history of galaxies.
