Tähemärgid, often translated as zodiac signs or celestial signs, are a system of twelve divisions of the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun on the celestial sphere. Each division is associated with a constellation and carries symbolic meaning in astrology. The signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. The order of the signs traditionally begins with Aries, representing the vernal equinox.

The concept of tähemärgid originated in ancient Babylonian astronomy and astrology. These divisions were not necessarily aligned with precise astronomical constellations as they are understood today, but rather with the general regions of the sky occupied by those constellations at the time the system was developed. The tropical zodiac, which is widely used in Western astrology, is based on the seasons, with the Sun entering Aries at the spring equinox. The sidereal zodiac, used in some Eastern traditions, is based on the fixed stars.

In astrology, each tähemärk is believed to possess distinct characteristics and influences that shape an individual's personality, destiny, and relationships. These associations are derived from a combination of mythology, symbolism, and historical observation. Astrologers use the position of the Sun, Moon, and planets within these signs at the time of a person's birth to interpret their birth chart, or natal chart. While tähemärgid are a cornerstone of astrological practice, their efficacy and scientific validity are not supported by mainstream science.
