They supervise workers, troubleshoot problems, enforce safety and quality standards, and report progress to site management. They also liaise with subcontractors, suppliers, and clients and maintain documentation.

Qualifications vary by sector but commonly include vocational or technical education related to the field and substantial hands-on experience. Supervisory training and safety certification are often required; in Finland, workers who supervise on site typically hold a Työturvallisuuskortti (occupational safety card) and may pursue further management training.
