Työmuisti, often translated as working memory, is a cognitive system responsible for temporarily holding and manipulating information for complex cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning, and comprehension. It is not a single storage location but rather a system involving multiple components that interact with each other and with long-term memory. The concept of working memory is distinct from short-term memory, which is primarily concerned with the passive storage of information. Working memory actively processes and transforms this information.

A prominent model of working memory is the Baddeley and Hitch model, which proposes three main components: the phonological loop, the visuospatial sketchpad, and the central executive. The phonological loop is responsible for processing auditory information, such as spoken words. The visuospatial sketchpad handles visual and spatial information, like remembering the layout of a room. The central executive acts as a control system, allocating attention, coordinating the activities of the other components, and interfacing with long-term memory. Later versions of the model have added the episodic buffer, which integrates information from various sources into a coherent episode.

Working memory plays a crucial role in everyday activities. For example, when following a recipe, working memory holds the current step while you locate the next ingredient. When engaging in a conversation, it keeps track of what has been said so far to allow for meaningful responses. Deficits in working memory are associated with various cognitive impairments and learning disabilities. Research on working memory utilizes tasks such as digit span, N-back tasks, and reading span to assess its capacity and efficiency. Understanding working memory is fundamental to comprehending how we learn, solve problems, and interact with our environment.
