Työhalleja are large indoor spaces intended for practical work that requires space for machinery, assembly, or hands-on training. In Finnish usage the term refers to workshop halls found in industrial settings, factories, vocational schools, and sometimes community makerspaces. The plural form työhalleja is used when speaking about several such spaces.

Typical design characteristics include an open floor plan with a high ceiling, a durable concrete floor, and a robust structural frame capable of supporting heavy equipment. Wide doors or loading docks facilitate moving large objects, while electrical systems, ventilation, and lighting are arranged to handle diverse workshop activities. Fire safety and clear circulation paths are important, as are flexible layouts that can be adapted to different tasks. Heating, cooling, and sometimes dust or fume extraction systems are common considerations, depending on the work performed inside the hall.

Common uses encompass manufacturing, metalworking, woodworking, vehicle maintenance, repair and testing, as well as assembly lines and prototype development. In vocational education, työhalleja provide space for practical training with benches, tools, and equipment. In the broader economy, such halls may also be used for storage, maintenance facilities, or multipurpose production and repair spaces. In recent decades some traditional työhalleja have been repurposed or renovated to accommodate modern needs, including integration with offices, coworking facilities, or energy-efficient upgrades, while others continue to operate as core components of manufacturing and logistics infrastructure.
