Typology is the study or systematic classification of types according to shared characteristics. It involves grouping individuals, objects, or phenomena into categories based on common traits, patterns, or qualities. This approach seeks to identify underlying structures or principles that define these categories and distinguish them from one another. Typologies are employed across various disciplines, including sociology, psychology, linguistics, theology, and biology, to bring order and understanding to complex information.

In sociology, typologies might classify social actors, social organizations, or social actions. For example, Max Weber developed a typology of social action, categorizing actions based on their subjective meaning for the actor, such as traditional, affectual, value-rational, and instrumental-rational action. In psychology, typologies have been used to classify personality types, such as those proposed by Carl Jung with his introversion-extraversion and thinking-feeling-sensation-intuition dimensions, which later influenced the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.

Linguistics may use typologies to classify languages based on their structural features, like word order (e.g., SVO, SOV) or phonological systems.
