Its primary function is to maintain a stable engine speed when the vehicle is stationary and the accelerator pedal is not being pressed, such as when stopped at a traffic light or in neutral gear. This stable idle speed is crucial for several reasons, including preventing engine stalling, ensuring proper operation of engine accessories like the air conditioning compressor and power steering pump, and managing fuel efficiency.

There are various types of idle speed control systems. Older systems often employed mechanical methods, such as a stepper motor that directly adjusted the throttle plate opening or controlled a bypass air passage. Modern engines typically utilize electronic idle air control (IAC) valves. These electronically controlled valves receive signals from the engine control unit (ECU), which monitors various engine parameters like engine temperature, load, and rotational speed. Based on this data, the ECU precisely regulates the amount of air bypassing the throttle plate to achieve the desired idle speed.

Common symptoms include rough idling, stalling when coming to a stop, unstable idle speed that fluctuates significantly, or an engine that idles too high or too low. These issues can be caused by a dirty or faulty IAC valve, clogged air passages, vacuum leaks, or problems with the ECU's sensors or programming. Diagnosis typically involves checking for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the ECU, inspecting the IAC valve for debris or damage, and verifying proper airflow and vacuum integrity within the intake system. Repair often involves cleaning or replacing the IAC valve and addressing any associated leaks or sensor faults.
