Tworegion, or two-region, is a modeling concept used across disciplines to describe a system that is divided into two adjoining spatial regions with distinct properties, separated by an interface. The approach is employed to capture how differences between the regions influence the behavior of a physical process, such as wave propagation, heat transfer, or chemical diffusion.

In a typical tworegion model, the domain is split into region A and region B, each with its own material or parameter values. Governing equations are written separately for each region and are joined at the interface through boundary or continuity conditions. The interface conditions enforce the appropriate transmission of fluxes and fields, ensuring physical consistency. The model often yields reflection, transmission, or exchange phenomena at the boundary, depending on the contrast between regions.

Applications occur in multiple fields. In electromagnetics, a two-region medium may have different permittivity or conductivity, with Maxwell’s equations solved in each region and interface conditions applied. In geophysics and acoustics, layered media model the crust and mantle or sedimentary layers, predicting wave reflection and transmission at boundaries. In thermal analysis, regions with different thermal conductivities describe heat flow across interfaces, potentially including interfacial resistance. In physiology and medical imaging, two-region models describe compartments with different diffusion or relaxation properties, aiding interpretation of spectroscopy data or diffusion processes.

Tworegion modeling is praised for its simplicity and clarity, but it also has limitations, since real systems may require more regions to capture complexity.
