Twoquadrant (often written two-quadrant) is a term used in power electronics and motor drive technology to describe a class of converters and control schemes that operate in two quadrants of the torque–speed plane. The designation indicates bidirectional energy flow is possible for one electrical variable (such as current) while the other variable (such as speed or voltage) is typically restricted to a single direction. This makes twoquadrant configurations simpler and often more cost-effective than full four-quadrant systems.

In practice, twoquadrant converters are commonly applied to DC motor drives and similar actuators. They can provide motoring and braking in one rotational direction, enabling efficient control without requiring full bidirectional capability for all operating modes. The approach is suitable for applications where the operating range does not require reversing motor direction or regenerating energy into the supply from all states.

Technical characteristics of twoquadrant systems include straightforward topologies, such as simplified H-bridge or chopper configurations, and control strategies based on pulse-width modulation or torque/velocity control. Protective features are important to manage overcurrent, overvoltage, and thermal conditions, given the concentrated duty of energy flow paths.

History and usage: the twoquadrant concept emerged with early power electronics as a lower-cost alternative to more complex four-quadrant drives. It remains relevant in many budget-conscious or application-specific motors and actuators, though modern systems occasionally favor four-quadrant solutions for full bidirectional operation.
