Tvärkulturella (transcultural) is a term used in Swedish-language discourse to describe processes, practices, and competencies that operate across cultural boundaries. It refers to the blending, negotiation, and renewal of cultural meanings in interactions with others, often producing hybrid identities and shared practices that cross traditional cultural lines.

In academic and professional contexts, transcultural concepts appear across anthropology, sociology, health care, education, and business. It is related to, but distinct from, intercultural and multicultural frameworks: intercultural focuses on interaction between cultures; multicultural describes coexistence of multiple cultures within a society; transcultural emphasizes movement beyond or across cultures, sometimes creating new, shared forms.

Historical roots of the idea include Fernando Ortiz’s concept of transculturation from the 1940s, describing the mixing of cultures in the Caribbean. In healthcare and social sciences, the term transcultural has been adopted to explain culturally competent practice, with notable usage in transcultural nursing as a framework for delivering care that respects patients’ cultural beliefs and practices.
