A tvmodem, also known as a cable modem, is a networking hardware device that provides broadband Internet access to a home or business through a cable television provider's coaxial cable network. It acts as a bridge between a user's home network and the Internet, translating data signals between the cable provider's network and the user's devices. Tvmodems typically connect to a user's router or directly to a computer via an Ethernet cable.

Cable modems operate on specific radio frequency channels within the coaxial cable network. Downstream channels carry data from the Internet to the user, while upstream channels carry data from the user to the Internet. The speed of a tvmodem is determined by the number of channels it can utilize and the modulation techniques employed. Standards like DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) define the communication protocols and ensure interoperability between modems and cable provider networks.

The primary function of a tvmodem is to receive digital data transmitted over the cable lines and convert it into a format that can be understood by computers and other network devices. Conversely, it takes outgoing data from a user's network and transmits it back over the cable network. Most modern tvmodems incorporate Wi-Fi capabilities, allowing them to serve as both a modem and a wireless router, eliminating the need for a separate device.
