A tvmodem, also known as a cable modem, is a networking hardware device that provides broadband Internet access to a home or business through a cable television provider's coaxial cable network. It acts as a bridge between a user's local area network (LAN) and the cable operator's infrastructure. Essentially, it translates data signals from the cable network into a format that can be understood by computers and other network devices.

The tvmodem receives downstream data from the Internet to the user and transmits upstream data from the user to the Internet. This is accomplished using specific frequency channels on the coaxial cable, separating them from the television channels. Modern tvmodems typically support high-speed data transfer, enabling activities such as streaming video, online gaming, and rapid file downloads. They come in various standards, with DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) being the most prevalent. Many tvmodems also include built-in Wi-Fi routers, allowing multiple devices to connect wirelessly to the internet. Troubleshooting a tvmodem often involves checking its status lights, restarting the device, or contacting the cable service provider.
