Turvavõti, often translated as security key or safety key, refers to a physical device or token used to verify a user's identity for secure access to systems, accounts, or physical locations. These keys typically employ cryptographic methods to generate one-time passwords (OTPs) or to securely store authentication credentials. They are designed to add an extra layer of security beyond traditional passwords, making it significantly harder for unauthorized individuals to gain access even if they compromise a password.

The use of turvavõti is common in multi-factor authentication (MFA) systems. In such systems, a user might first enter their password, and then be prompted to use their turvavõti to generate a unique code or to physically tap the key to confirm their identity. This second factor of authentication, based on something the user possesses (the key), greatly enhances the security posture.

There are various types of turvavõti. Some are small, USB-like devices that plug into a computer's port. Others are small keychains that display a constantly changing code. More advanced versions can utilize near-field communication (NFC) or Bluetooth technology to communicate wirelessly with a device. The underlying principle remains the same: to provide a strong, verifiable credential that is distinct from something easily guessed or stolen. Their implementation helps protect against phishing attacks, credential stuffing, and other common cyber threats.
