Taxonomy and naming. The name turtuose is a constructed term used in worldbuilding. In most sources it is treated as a genus within the tortoise lineage, often grouped with the family Testudinidae, though some authors treat it as a distinct group due to its fictional status.

Description. Adults range from 40 to 60 cm in length. The shell is domed with a central keel; skin is olive to brown with irregular markings. Males may have longer tails and more elongated foreclaws used in courtship displays.

Habitat and ecology. Turtuose are described as dwelling in slow rivers, floodplains, and swamp forests across the fictional archipelago of Lymara.
