Turniire is a structured competitive event in which participants compete across multiple rounds to determine an overall winner. The term is cognate with German Turnier and French tournoi, and in Finnish the equivalent word is turniiri; the concept traces back to medieval tournaments.

Turniire can take several formats. In knockout or single-elimination tournaments, a loser is eliminated after each round; in double-elimination, a participant may lose once and still continue; in round-robin, all competitors face a subset or all others, with standings shaping advancement. Swiss-system tournaments pair participants with similar scores each round, maximizing the number of rounds while minimizing total games played. Tournaments may be organized as open events or restricted to clubs, schools, or professional circuits.

Organization typically includes formal schedules, seeding based on prior results or ratings, and rules governing play, time controls, equipment, and conduct. Matches may be held in person or online, often using clocks and standardized boards or software.
