Tuntoaistinsa is the Finnish term for the sense of touch, the somatosensory modality by which the skin perceives mechanical and thermal stimuli. It encompasses perception of contact, pressure, texture, vibration, and temperature, and is integrated with other senses to create tactile perception and object recognition.

The sense is mediated by a network of cutaneous receptors, including Merkel cells and Meissner corpuscles for fine touch, Pacinian corpuscles for vibration, and Ruffini endings for stretch and texture. Thermal receptors detect warmth and cold. Signals travel from the skin through peripheral nerves to the spinal cord and then to the brain via pathways such as the dorsal column–medial lemniscus for fine touch and proprioception, and the spinothalamic tract for pain and temperature. The somatosensory cortex in the brain processes these signals, enabling precise localization and discrimination of tactile stimuli.

Tuntoaistinsa develops in infancy and can change across the lifespan. Sensitivity can decline with age or due to conditions such as diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, nerve injury, or skin diseases. Variability among individuals is influenced by genetic factors, skin characteristics, and environmental exposure.

Clinical assessment of tactile function uses methods such as two-point discrimination tests and Semmes–Weinstein monofilament testing to gauge tactile acuity and protective sensation. Rehabilitation and sensory re-education may aid recovery after injury or in sensory loss, aiming to improve functional use of touch. Etymologically, the term combines "tunto" (sense) and "aisti" (senses), with the possessive suffix "-insa" indicating ownership, i.e., one’s sense of touch.
