Tumor-bearing is a term used to describe an organism that carries one or more tumors. In humans, it commonly refers to patients diagnosed with cancer. In biomedical research, it refers to animals deliberately induced or bred to develop tumors for study.

In animal models, tumors may be established by inoculating tumor cells subcutaneously or orthotopically, using human cell lines in immunodeficient mice (xenografts) or mouse cell lines in syngeneic hosts. Spontaneous or genetically engineered models can also produce tumor-bearing animals. These models enable the study of tumor growth, metastasis, angiogenesis, and the evaluation of therapies, including chemotherapy, targeted agents, immunotherapy, or radiotherapy.

Assessment typically includes measuring tumor size with calipers, imaging, and survival endpoints. Animal welfare considerations involve humane endpoints, analgesia, and environmental enrichment, followed by institutional and regulatory guidelines.

In clinical contexts, the term underscores disease burden and can influence treatment decisions, prognosis, and eligibility for trials. The concept of being tumor-bearing captures both the biological aspects of tumor presence and the practical implications for care, research design, and therapeutic evaluation.
