Tulitikkutyypit refers to the different kinds of matches. The most common types are safety matches and strike-anywhere matches. Safety matches are designed to ignite only when struck against a specially prepared surface, typically on the side of the matchbox. This design enhances safety by reducing the risk of accidental ignition. Strike-anywhere matches, conversely, contain chemicals in the match head that allow them to be ignited by striking them on almost any rough surface. While convenient, they pose a greater safety risk due to their ease of ignition.

Beyond these primary categories, matches can also be differentiated by their intended use. For example, there are fireplace matches, which are longer and thicker to facilitate lighting fires in hearths, and stormproof or waterproof matches, which are treated to withstand wind and moisture, making them reliable in adverse conditions. These specialized matches often have heads made of more robust materials and may be coated with additional chemicals to ensure ignition in challenging environments. The manufacturing process and the specific chemical compositions of the striking head and the igniter surface determine the type and safety of a match.
