Scientifically, they belong to the genus *Cobitis*, specifically the species *Cobitis taenia*, commonly known as the European spined loach.

These fish are slender-bodied, with elongated, eel-like forms and distinctive spiny fins. They typically grow to about 10–15 centimeters in length, though some may reach up to 20 centimeters. Tulemusid are bottom-dwellers, feeding primarily on small invertebrates, algae, and detritus. They are well-adapted to cold, oxygen-rich waters and are often found in shallow, slow-moving streams and rivers with sandy or gravelly substrates.

In Estonian culture, tulemusid are sometimes considered minor game fish, though they are not commonly targeted by anglers. Instead, they play an ecological role by controlling insect populations and contributing to nutrient cycling in their habitats.
