The term originates from the Finnish words "tuho" (destruction) and "eläin" (animal), indicating the removal or suppression of pests. Pest control encompasses a range of strategies, including chemical, biological, cultural, mechanical, and integrated pest management (IPM). In Finland, legal frameworks govern the use of pesticides and biocontrol agents, ensuring that treatment methods meet safety and environmental standards.

Chemical pest control involves the application of synthetic pesticides such as insecticides, fungicides, and rodenticides. These substances are regulated by the Finnish Ministry for the Environment and require registration, certification of applicators, and monitoring of residues in food. Biological pest control, in contrast, employs natural enemies—predators, parasitoids, or pathogens—to keep pest populations in check. Examples include the use of lady beetles to control aphids or Bacillus thuringiensis to target caterpillar pests.

Integrated pest management integrates several techniques with a focus on prevention and minimal environmental impact.
