Träfinisher, or wood finisher, refers to any coating or treatment applied to timber to protect the surface, enhance its appearance, and modify its physical properties. In Swedish and Nordic woodworking contexts the term encompasses a range of products and techniques, from penetrating oils and waxes to film-forming varnishes and lacquers. The goal is to preserve the wood against moisture, wear, and UV exposure while achieving a desired look, from the natural grain to a more opaque color.

Common types of träfinisher include penetrating oils (such as linseed or tung oil) that soak into the wood to deepen color and provide slow-drying protection; waxes for a soft sheen and additional surface friction; and film-forming coatings like polyurethane, alkyd or acrylic varnishes, shellac, and water-based lacquers that cure to a solid surface film. Stains and tinted finishes may be used to alter color before or within the finishing system. Finishes may be solvent-based or water-based, with varying levels of odor, drying time, and environmental impact. Outdoor finishes typically require UV resistance and water repellency, while indoor finishes emphasize low odor and durability.

Application generally involves surface preparation (cleaning and sanding), followed by the chosen finish applied by brush, cloth, or spray. Recoating requires sanding between coats and adequate drying time to achieve full hardness. Maintenance ranges from occasional cleaning to periodic reapplication, depending on use, exposure, and the finish type. Safety considerations include ventilation, proper handling of solvents or isocyanates, and adherence to manufacturer instructions.
