Trumpetfish are predatory, using their specialized snouts to suck small fish and crustaceans from their hiding places. They are often observed hovering motionless, waiting for prey or using larger fish as a screen to approach their meals undetected. Some species are known to exhibit symbiotic behavior, following larger predators like groupers and sharks, and then ambushing prey that is disturbed by the larger fish.

While generally not targeted by commercial fisheries, trumpetfish are sometimes caught as bycatch. They are not considered endangered, and their populations are stable in many regions.
