Trombózisra refers to the condition of thrombosis, which is the formation of a blood clot, or thrombus, within a blood vessel. This clot can impede or block blood flow. Thrombosis can occur in both arteries and veins, and its consequences depend on the location and severity of the blockage.

Venous thrombosis, commonly known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), typically affects the legs. Symptoms can include swelling, pain, redness, and warmth in the affected limb. A significant risk associated with DVT is pulmonary embolism, where a piece of the clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, potentially causing a life-threatening condition.

Arterial thrombosis occurs when a clot forms in an artery, restricting blood flow to vital organs. If it affects an artery supplying the brain, it can lead to a stroke. If it occurs in an artery supplying the heart, it can cause a heart attack.

Several factors can increase the risk of developing thrombosis. These include prolonged immobility, such as during long journeys or after surgery, certain medical conditions like cancer and inflammatory diseases, genetic predispositions, obesity, smoking, and the use of some medications, including hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives.

Diagnosis of thrombosis often involves medical history, physical examination, and imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI. Treatment typically aims to prevent the clot from growing, reduce the risk of further clot formation, and prevent complications. Anticoagulant medications, often referred to as blood thinners, are a cornerstone of treatment. In some cases, procedures to dissolve or remove the clot may be necessary. Prevention strategies include regular movement, staying hydrated, and sometimes the use of anticoagulant medication, particularly for individuals at high risk.
