Tromboos is a term encountered in some texts to denote thrombi, which are blood clots that form within blood vessels. In standard medical English, the singular is thrombus and the plural thrombi; in many languages the word for clot is similar, and transliterations such as tromboos may appear in nonstandard spelling. The concept refers to pathologic clots that can obstruct blood flow and cause tissue damage depending on where they form.

Formation of a thrombus involves a combination of platelet activation, activation of the coagulation cascade, and changes to the blood vessel lining. This process, often summarized by Virchow’s triad as stasis, endothelial injury, and hypercoagulability, leads to a clot that can remain attached to the vessel wall or detach and travel as an embolus.

Clinical presentation varies by location. Deep vein thrombosis typically causes leg swelling, warmth, and pain; pulmonary embolism may present with chest pain, shortness of breath, or sudden onset of symptoms. Other thrombi can affect the brain, heart, or other organs. Diagnosis uses imaging tests such as duplex ultrasound for leg veins or CT pulmonary angiography for the lungs, complemented by blood tests like D-dimer in selected cases.

Treatment aims to prevent clot growth and embolization and to restore normal blood flow. Anticoagulants (for example, heparin, warfarin, or direct oral anticoagulants) are commonly used, with duration guided by risk factors and event type. In severe cases, thrombolysis or mechanical thrombectomy may be considered. Prevention focuses on risk factor modification, early mobilization after surgery, adequate hydration, and, for high-risk individuals, prophylactic anticoagulation.
