Trisomy is a type of aneuploidy, which is a condition where an individual has an abnormal number of chromosomes. Specifically, trisomy occurs when there are three copies of a particular chromosome instead of the usual two. This extra genetic material can lead to various developmental and health issues, the severity of which depends on which chromosome is affected and the extent of the extra genetic material.

The most common cause of trisomy is a nondisjunction event during meiosis, the process of cell division that produces eggs and sperm. Nondisjunction can result in a gamete (egg or sperm) with an extra chromosome. If this gamete is fertilized, the resulting zygote will have three copies of that chromosome.

Trisomies can occur for any of the 23 pairs of human chromosomes. However, only a few are compatible with life. Some of the most well-known trisomies include Trisomy 21, which causes Down syndrome, Trisomy 18, which causes Edwards syndrome, and Trisomy 13, which causes Patau syndrome. These conditions are often associated with intellectual disability, distinctive facial features, and a range of physical abnormalities.

The diagnosis of trisomy can be made during pregnancy through prenatal screening tests and diagnostic tests like amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. After birth, genetic testing can confirm the diagnosis. There is no cure for trisomies, but medical management focuses on addressing the specific health issues and developmental needs of the affected individual. Support and therapies are crucial for improving quality of life.
