Tripels are a family of Belgian pale strong ales known for their bright color, high alcohol, and dry finish. The term originated with Belgian abbey and brewery traditions in the 20th century, where tripel indicated a beer of greater strength than the brewery’s standard offerings. While commonly associated with abbey-style beers, the label is used by many non-abbey breweries as well.

Typical characteristics include a pale golden to amber appearance, clear or lightly hazy, with a light to medium body and lively carbonation. The style relies on pale malts and often added fermentable sugars (such as candi sugar) to boost alcohol content without increasing sweetness. Yeast contributes fruity esters—often pear and banana—and spicy or clove-like notes, while hop bitterness is generally moderate rather than prominent, balancing the beer rather than dominating the palate.

Flavor profiles tend toward a dry, crisp finish with a subtle malt backbone and a pronounced estery character. The overall impression is a potent, thirst-quenching beer with complex fruit and spice notes, rather than a heavily bitter or sweet ale.
