Triangulációval is the Hungarian word for triangulation. Triangulation is a fundamental surveying and navigation technique. It involves determining the location of a point by measuring angles to it from two other points of known location. The intersection of the two lines of sight from the known points forms a triangle, and by applying trigonometry, the unknown distance and position can be calculated.

In cartography and surveying, triangulation networks are established by measuring angles and sometimes distances between a series of interconnected points. This allows for the creation of detailed maps and the precise measurement of land boundaries. Historically, triangulation was crucial for large-scale mapping projects and exploration.

In navigation, particularly at sea, triangulation was historically used with celestial observations. Sailors would determine their position by taking bearings to known landmarks or by using astronomical data. Modern navigation systems, such as GPS, employ a similar principle but use radio signals from satellites instead of visual sightings. The receiver calculates its distance from multiple satellites, and by knowing the satellites' precise locations, it can triangulate its own position.

The concept of triangulation also extends to other fields, such as computer graphics for rendering 3D models, and in social sciences for validating research findings by using multiple perspectives or data sources. The core idea remains the same: using multiple known points to determine the location or properties of an unknown point.
