Treverk is a term used in several Nordic languages to denote wood material derived from trees, including timber, lumber, boards, and other wooden products. In construction and carpentry, treverk refers to both raw material and finished products shaped from wood. The concept encompasses a range of commodities, from simple dimensional lumber used for framing to engineered wood products.

Types and forms: Softwood species such as pine, spruce, and fir are common in structural treverk because of their light weight and workability; hardwoods such as oak, beech, and maple are valued for durability and appearance in furniture and flooring. Common forms include boards, planks, panels (plywood, veneer), particleboard, and oriented strand board (OSB). Engineered wood products, including glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT), combine layers of wood to improve strength and stability for larger structures.

Processing: Treverk production starts with harvesting and milling of logs, followed by drying to reduce moisture content. Drying methods, including air drying and kiln drying, influence dimensional stability and resistance to decay. Further steps include planing, surfacing, and, if needed, treatment with preservatives, sealing, or finishes to enhance durability and aesthetics.

Applications and sustainability: Treverk is widely used in construction, residential and commercial building, furniture manufacturing, and consumer wood products. It is considered a renewable resource when sourced from responsibly managed forests, with recycling and reuse opportunities at end of life.
