Traumesituationer refer to events in which an individual has sustained significant physical injury requiring urgent medical assessment and treatment. They occur in many settings – road traffic crashes, falls, violence, burns, drownings, crush injuries, or mass casualty events. The term is used in Swedish and other Northern European medical literature to describe the spectrum of acute trauma events and the corresponding clinical response.

In prehospital and hospital care, the response centers on rapid assessment and stabilization. The initial evaluation follows the ABCDE approach: Airway with cervical spine protection, Breathing, Circulation with hemorrhage control, Disability (neurological status), Exposure. A primary survey aims to identify and treat immediately life-threatening injuries. A secondary survey, performed after stabilization, systematically assesses for injuries that may have been missed.

Common diagnostic and treatment tools include focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST), radiography, computed tomography, and laboratory studies. Essential interventions include airway management, oxygen therapy, control of bleeding, fluid resuscitation guided by protocols, blood product administration, analgesia, and rapid definitive care at appropriate trauma centers. Reassessment and ongoing monitoring are critical.

Special considerations include differences between blunt and penetrating trauma, pediatric trauma, and elderly patients. In mass casualty situations, triage protocols prioritize those most likely to benefit. After acute care, rehabilitation, prevention of complications, and psychological support are important components of recovery.
