In English usage, the more common term is traumatologist or trauma surgeon; traumatologian is rare and may reflect linguistic variation in other languages or historical texts.

Practitioners of traumatology work in acute care settings and are integral members of trauma teams. Their responsibilities include rapid resuscitation, conducting primary and secondary surveys, interpreting imaging, and coordinating definitive treatment. They manage both operative and nonoperative interventions for injuries affecting the musculoskeletal, neurological, thoracic, abdominal, or soft tissues. The role often requires collaboration with orthopedics, neurosurgery, general surgery, plastic surgery, anesthesia, critical care, and rehabilitation services, with a focus on preventing complications and facilitating recovery for patients who have sustained multiple injuries.
