A trappstegspyramid, also known as a step pyramid, is an architectural form consisting of a series of descending levels or steps. These structures are typically built with stone or brick. The term "trappstegspyramid" is Swedish, literally translating to "stair-step pyramid." This design is distinct from the smooth-sided pyramids found in some cultures.

The most famous examples of step pyramids are found in ancient Egypt, such as the Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara. This early Egyptian pyramid was a monumental tomb for the pharaoh Djoser and is considered one of the earliest large-scale cut stone constructions in the world. The step pyramid design is thought to have evolved from earlier mastaba tombs, which were rectangular, flat-topped structures. Builders gradually stacked mastabas of decreasing size on top of each other to achieve the stepped effect.

Beyond Egypt, step pyramid-like structures can be observed in other ancient civilizations. Mesoamerica, for instance, features prominent step pyramids like those at Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza in Mexico. These Mesoamerican structures often served different purposes, including astronomical observation platforms and ceremonial centers, in addition to being tombs or temples. The construction methods and specific architectural styles varied significantly between these different cultural contexts, but the fundamental principle of a stacked, terraced form remained consistent. The visual impression is that of a staircase ascending towards the sky.
