A tranzisztornak is a Hungarian term that translates to "transistor" in English. A transistor is a semiconductor device used to amplify or switch electronic signals and electrical power. It is a fundamental building block of modern electronic devices, found in everything from radios and televisions to computers and smartphones.

Transistors work by controlling the flow of current through a semiconductor material. They typically have three terminals: a base, a collector, and an emitter. A small current or voltage applied to the base controls a much larger current flowing between the collector and emitter. This amplification property is what allows transistors to boost weak signals. Their switching capability enables them to act as digital gates, forming the basis of logic circuits in computers.

The invention of the transistor in 1947 at Bell Labs by John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley revolutionized electronics. Before transistors, bulky and unreliable vacuum tubes were used for amplification and switching. The transistor's small size, low power consumption, and high reliability paved the way for miniaturization and the development of integrated circuits, further accelerating technological progress. There are two main types of transistors: bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) and field-effect transistors (FETs), each with different operating principles and applications.
