Transmissioonitüüp refers to the method by which power is transmitted from an engine to the driven wheels of a vehicle. In its simplest form, it involves a series of mechanical components designed to manage the engine's output and deliver it effectively for propulsion. The primary function is to allow the engine to operate within its optimal speed range while the vehicle moves at various speeds.

The most common type of transmissioonitüüp is the manual transmission. This system requires the driver to select gears using a gear shifter and disengage the engine from the transmission using a clutch pedal. Different gear ratios are available, each suited for specific driving conditions, such as starting from a stop, cruising at highway speeds, or climbing hills.

Another prevalent type is the automatic transmission. This system automatically changes gears without direct driver input, typically using a torque converter and a planetary gearset. Automatic transmissions offer convenience by eliminating the need for clutch operation and manual gear selection, making driving easier, especially in heavy traffic.

Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs) represent a different approach. Instead of fixed gear ratios, CVTs use a belt or chain and variable-diameter pulleys to provide a seamless range of gear ratios. This allows the engine to maintain a constant, efficient speed regardless of the vehicle's velocity.

Less common but still relevant are semi-automatic transmissions, which blend elements of both manual and automatic systems. These may involve automated manual transmissions (AMTs) that have a manual gearbox with automated clutch and shifting, or dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs) that offer very fast and efficient gear changes due to having two clutches. The choice of transmissioonitüüp significantly impacts a vehicle's performance, fuel efficiency, and driving experience.
