The basic principle of a transistor regulator involves using a transistor's gain to amplify the voltage difference between a reference voltage and the output voltage. A reference voltage, often generated by a Zener diode or a more sophisticated bandgap reference IC, provides a stable benchmark. This reference is compared to the output voltage, and any deviation is detected. This error signal is then amplified by a transistor, which adjusts the conductivity of a power transistor connected in series or parallel with the load. This feedback loop continuously corrects any fluctuations, keeping the output voltage or current within a desired range.

Transistor regulators can be broadly categorized into linear regulators and switching regulators, although the term "transistorisäätimiä" most commonly refers to linear types. Linear regulators, while simple and producing low noise, dissipate excess voltage as heat, leading to lower efficiency, especially with large voltage differences between input and output.
